Enrollment Overview

Enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year is in progress. All curricular course enrollments will be validated by Dr. Curtis and the high school counselors. If you’re not sure what class you are supposed to be in, just enroll in concert band and Dr. Curtis will adjust the course if necessary.

 

Four classes will be offered for credit.

Concert Band: The Concert Band rehearses a variety of musical styles to be performed at three concerts each year. Concert Band is the first step in the high school band program. Concert Band offers togetherness for freshman and leadership experience for sophomores and juniors. No audition is required for selection.

Wind Ensemble: The Wind Ensemble rehearses a variety of musical styles to be performed at three concerts and state instrumental music contest each year. Students can join Wind Ensemble through audition or selection by the end of the year. Those selected must demonstrate a high degree of proficiency on a selected instrument.

Jazz Lab: The Jazz Lab band meets after school at the completion of Marching Band. Jazz lab performs standard and contemporary jazz literature and exposes students to improvisation. Jazz Lab performs at two concert performances each year. Instruments include Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpets, Guitar, Bass. No audition is required to become a member.

Jazz Ensemble: The Jazz Ensemble performs standard and contemporary jazz literature and exposes students to improvisation. Jazz Ensemble presents at least two public performances and enters several competitions each year. Instruments include Saxophone, Trombones, Trumpets, Guitar, Bass, Drum Set, Piano, or Vocal. Audition is required for selection.

 

Five extra-curricular activities will be offered.

Marching Band and Color Guard: Together the marching band and color guard perform their show for home football games and weekend competitions in September and October. Color Guard adds visual effect to the show through dancing, flags, and weapons techniques. Rehearsals are after school except band camp which is held before school starts. There may be additional rehearsals at the discretion of the directors or section leaders.

Winter Guard: Winter Guard is similar to Color Guard but performs to pre-recorded music. Winter Guard performs at weekend competitions from late January through mid-April. Rehearsals are in the evenings except for several Saturday camps. An audition is required.

Woodwind Choir, Brass Choir, and Percussion Ensemble: Choirs and Ensembles meet after school and provide students with the opportunity to enhance their playing skills. No audition is required.

Solos and Small Ensembles: All FHN band students have the opportunity to perform competitively as soloists and in small ensembles at the District Music Festival. Those receiving an Exemplary/Gold rating (1) at districts qualify for the State Music Festival at The University of Missouri-Columbia. These students often rehearse during class time and after school.

Basketball Band: Basketball band performs at home basketball games. It serves as the music and cheer section. Rehearsals are set each season.
